Zygomatic arch reduction or Cheekbone reduction surgery is a cosmetic surgical procedure that involves reshaping or reducing the width of the zygomatic arch, which is the bony structure that forms the side of the face.
This procedure is normally performed for
aesthetic reasons to achieve a more balanced facial appearance, particularly in individuals who feel that the width of their mid-face is too prominent or too broad.
The balance of the cheekbone is a key to a perfect face since the appropriate width and roundness of the zygomatic bones define the best shape of the cheeks, in which cover approximately one-third of the overall facial proportion. So, adjusting your cheekbones can completely change your face.
It’s important to understand that the degree of smoothness and roundness of zygomatic bones as well as the concern of this particular part vary among patients.
This can be done simultaneously with other facial surgeries (like V-line surgery, etc.) as a powerful combination to achieve the best results. Since this procedure can transform the facial visage, it is crucial to be performed by highly experienced surgeons who specialize in cosmetic facial bone surgeries or facial feminization surgeries to achieve the best possible outcome without any
complication.
A good candidate:
Candidates should have a genuine concern about the appearance of their zygomatic arch and desire to achieve a more balanced facial contour.
Candidates should have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the surgery.
In fact, nobody has perfectly symmetry of cheek contour between the right side and left one, however it is our practice to take this issue in planning of adjustment for a better symmetry.
Preoperative assessment:
Submentovertex view of skull or facial CT is often required in order to measure and then calculate the degree of reduction for both side of zygoma.
Surgical technique of Zygomatic arch reduction:
Cheekbone reduction is
normally done under general anesthesia as inpatient basis. The surgery itself involves making mini-incision (1-1.5 cm) at the sideburn in front of ear and also inside the mouth. During the actual surgery, we combined zygomatic arch osteotomy and L-shaped osteotomy of the zygomatic body and reset the free zygomatic complex upward and inward to a target position and fixed it with 2 bent plates. The incisions are then closed using sutures.
Recovery:
After the surgery, you will likely experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Pain medication and post-operative instructions will be provided to manage your recovery. It’s important to follow your surgeon’s guidelines for recovery, including dietary restrictions and oral hygiene.
