Voice Feminization Surgery

OVERVIEW

Voice feminization surgery (VFS), also known as feminization laryngoplasty, is a male to female (MTF) procedure aiming to change a masculine voice into a feminine voice.

WHY VOICE FEMINIZATION SURGERY?

As everyone knows, the voice is considered a very remarkable gender indicator. Only by hearing someone speak, you can immediately distinguish whether the person speaking is male or female. Thus, voice feminizing surgery is equally necessary to gender reassignment surgery and facial feminization for a male to female transgender.

TECHNIQUE OF VOICE FEMINIZATION SURGERY

Our board-certified otolaryngologist (ENT) utilizes anterior web formation technique which involves the dissection of the anterior portion of vocal fold membrane and suturing out vocal fold muscles to shorten vocal fold’s size. And this technique does not affect the integrity of the voice box framework, so speaking and singing with stable and natural pitch are possible after surgery.

The anterior web formation is done precisely using a microlaryngoscopy for permanent thinning of the vocal folds. Since the vocal folds are approached intra-orally with state-of-the-art instruments, there will be no scar or incision on the neck skin.

  5. Fourth week after surgery, you can talk normally with no screaming or shouting.
  6. Sixth week after surgery, you can shout and sing.
  7. Improvement on your pitch will be noticeable after the sixth week, but you are expected to experience a cracking voice around 10 weeks.
  8. Further instructions will be given during this time including the plan to attend a voice training with a speech therapist in your area. Voice therapy is a significant step to enhance the result of voice feminization surgery.
