Forehead Augmentation Surgery

A forehead augmentation, also called forehead implant,  is a cosmetic surgical procedure to adjust the appearance of the forehead. This aims to modify the specific indented area and volume of the forehead using bone cement, implants or autologous fat to achieve a curved and rounded forehead that is in proportion to other facial features.

Typically, candidates consider naturally rounded and well-defined foreheads as aesthetically pleasing and decide on a forehead augmentation to redefine the unpleasantly flattened foreheads for the results they desire.

For some candidates who crave the best possible feminine outcome of the upper face, forehead augmentation surgery can be done in conjunction with forehead contouring surgery and/or forehead and brow lift surgery since the 3 procedures can share the same incision.

At WIH International Hospital, our experienced and skilled team of board-certified surgeons is ready to offer 4 forehead augmentation techniques which can be selected specially to answer each individual’s unique conditions and expectations.

1.    Forehead Augmentation with Silicone Implant

A forehead augmentation with silicone implant is an ideal choice for candidates who desire a larger degree of forehead silhouette enhancement than that of the bone cement. To achieve a more smooth contour and fixation of the implant with minimal capsule contraction, the forehead silicone implant can be corrugated artistically for each individual. By utilizing this technique, WIH surgeons will make a short incision to place the material inside.

2.    Forehead Augmentation with Micro-Autologous Fat Transplantation (MAFT)

Also known as forehead fat grafting or fat transfer, forehead augmentation with micro-autologous fat transplantation (MAFT) is to inject fat into the forehead area to achieve the most natural-looking outcome. Using this technique, WIH surgeons will perform liposuction to harvest fat cells from the specific body parts (i.e. inner or outer thighs, abdomen areas and underarms) and transfer to the target area to improve contour. However, this technique may require touch-ups to achieve the best possible results since the fat cells can be naturally absorbed over time.

3.    Forehead Augmentation with Bone Cement

Also referred to as a bony augmentation, a forehead augmentation with bone cement involves the utilization of a US-FDA-cleared PMMA (or polymethylmethacrylate) which is bone cement. The advantage of this technique includes the personalized design of bone cement to improve the shape and volume for each individual, exceptional anatomical fit and the natural-looking, stable and permanent results.

Forehead Augmentation with Silicone Implant / Bone Cement

Type of Anesthesia:  General anesthesia for patient’s utmost safety

Operation Time:        2 - 3 hours

Length of Stay:         2 days 1 night

Forehead Augmentation with Micro-Autologous Fat Transplantation (MAFT)

Type of Anesthesia:   Local anesthesia

Operation hour:         2 - 3 hours

Length of Stay:          No admission

  1. Following surgery, a soft dressing is placed around the forehead and left in position overnight.
  2. After the night of surgery, the dressing will be replaced with an elastic bandage for 7 - 10 days.
  3. After the elastic bandage is removed, wear the compression garment as much as possible for at least 2 weeks to reduce swelling.
  4. For candidates who decide on forehead augmentation with bone cement or silicone implant, use a cold compress. In the first 72 hours after surgery, using a cold compress can help reduce swelling and bruising.
  5. You should rest with your head elevated in a recliner or with 2 pillows or more for at least the first week after surgery.
  6. Avoid heavy lifting, vigorous exercise or strenuous activity for 4 weeks.
  7. Wear button-up shirts during recovery to prevent irritating the scalp.
  8. Pain is well managed with prescribed medications.
  9. Stitches will be removed after 1-2 weeks, depending on your healing.
  10. Clean your wound with the provided mild antiseptic solution as instructed by the doctor to prevent infection.

1.    What are differences between forehead augmentation with micro-autologous fat transplantation and bone cement?

Forehead augmentation with micro-autologous fat transplantation (MAFT) (forehead fat grafting or fat transfer) is a technique that requires no incision to inject fat into the forehead area to enhance its appearance and volume. Cleared by US-FDA, it provides the most natural-looking and safe outcome as is the fat harvested from the patient's own body parts. However, this technique may require touch-ups since the fat cells are naturally absorbable.

Forehead augmentation with micro-autologous fat transplantation (MAFT) is also US-FDA-approved safe to redefine the shape and volume of the forehead. This technique involves the utilization of bone cement, or chemically polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and requires a short incision along the hairline. The stable and permanent results can be expected after surgery, meaning it requires no touch-up. It can deliver a natural-looking outcome if performed by the right plastic surgeons.

To attain successful and satisfying results possible, both techniques require board-certified plastic surgeons who are highly-experienced and skilled.
